Favourite track: 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'

It is the summer of 1986 and I'm 16. By now, a dedicated vegetarian post-Meat Is Murder, I was excited to have a new The Smiths album to obsess over. I bought my copy during a daytrip to London, where I was by then allowed to travel to by train with friends, at the Virgin Megastore. After lowering the stylus onto the vinyl on the record player in my bedroom, I became lost in a world of jangly guitars and morose, yet humorous lyrics; There Is A Light became my instant favourite track, followed by Bigmouth. I later bought the cassette to listen to endlessly on my Walkman. Fast-forward to 2016 - the Queen is still not dead and the music of The Smiths lives on. Take me out tonight, Johnny.
