The Queen Is Dead is a textbook example of what Neil Tennant would call The Smiths’ Imperial Phase. But all that would be simplifying it. Real magic defies exposition. I’ve learned all ten songs on guitar, but I still don’t know them well enough. That will take me another 30 years at least. But what a privilege it is to know them at all. One of the best LPs ever: mysterious, alluring and never-ending.
